If Kannada films have been looking glossy and luxurious, then Santhosh Rai Pathaje has had something to do with it. The cinematographer ' who is also a director, script writer, costume designer and now, colourist ' weaves his magic with John Jani Janardhan (JJJ). With the track Hudgeer Hudgeer releasing today, the multi-faceted Santhosh spoke to Bangalore Times about the movie and more'
First off, tell us about Hudgeer Hudgeer'The song features
Aindrita Ray, and it looks like a club song, with many fun elements.
But it's not a regular club song or item number; most club songs are mostly about dancing, but this one reflects the joy of the three lead actors (Yogi,
Krishna Ajai Rao and Krishna). It is a dream song with a lot of colour.
You are known for your lavish style and glossy work'I never intentionally try to be glossy. I think that unknowingly, what I see around me reflects in my work. When I am free, I like to watch foreign films. I am exposed to urban trends, love travelling and like western songs, so, I think all that plays a role in my work.
You are more than just a cinematographer for JJJ'Yes, I shot and did digital intermediate (colour correction) for the entire film, and I think that I am the only
DOP in India to do that for a commercial film. I did the colour correction since when it comes to visuals, it's very hard to describe, say, a certain tone that I have in mind for a shot to another person. One needs proper technical knowledge and it is a tedious job, but I decide to do the colour correction as well so that I can bring alive the vision I have in my mind. I am fascinated with colours.
You have been around for 14 years. What makes you one of the most sought-after cinematographers in the Kannada film industry? There is an abundance of talent, but apart from talent, a person's character and discipline also matter. I am 100% committed to my films, and, in fact, only do one film at a time. Usually, DOPs only know their art, but having been a director, I am involved in all the creative fields, such as the costumes and the script. Of course, the quality of my work also keeps me in demand.
